The Olympic Truce

Olympics are the series of games played after every four years. They include several track events, indoor games and outdoor games. The Olympics are played in different seasons, the winter Olympics and the summer Olympics, symbolising the strength of man.

The Olympic truce is a sacred tradition, originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 9th century, which literally means 'holding of hands'. It was announced
during each of the Olympic festivals, to allow visitors and athletes to travel safely to Olympia and back to their respective countries. The Olympics had faced many political crisis, hence, the concept of Olympic truce was introduced. An inscription describing the truce was written on a bronze discus which was displayed at Olympia.

During the truce, which lasted for two-to-three months, wars were suspended, armies were prohibited from entering Elis or threatening the games, and legal disputes and carrying out of death penalties were forbidden.

The Olympics have survived two world wars, and numerous political conflicts. The truce has been successful in maintaining peace, uniting nations, and continuing of games.

In 1996, the Athens bid a committee to revive the Olympic truce and promoting it to the world through the Olympic flame rally. Three years later, the International Olympic Committee announced the establishment of the International Truce Foundation and International Truce Centre in cooperation with Greece. The vision was to protect the interests of athletes and sport, and to promote peaceful principles in modern day. Each host city is encouraged to the meaning and spirit of Olympic truce in planning and staging of games.

The goals of the truce are:
  1. Mobilise youth for promotion of Olympic ideas.
  2. Use sport to establish contact between communities in conflicts.
  3. Offer humanitarian support in countries at war.
  4. Create a window of opportunities for dialogue reconciliation.
Because of this, today, the Olympics have become a major international event. They are regarded as the world's foremost sports competition where more than 200 nations participate. Participating in Olympics is the dream of every athlete. It has played an important role in spreading peace. It's logo a graphic with three elements, a dove, flames and the Olympic rings that symbolises sporting friendship and unity of people.

Quote: "Peace is not merely a distinct goal, but a way to achieve our goal"
