In 1834, he was elected to the legislature for the first time. He was re-elected in 1838 and 1840. Seeing his continous victories, The Republican party nominated him for the presidency elections. He again won the elections and became the president.
In 1865, he succeeded in achieving his aim by passing the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery. The great personality and a role model for many, left the world on 14th April, 1865.
